The huge earth collapse hole swallowing the man in Shenzhen China southern city

One man died when a massive sink hole opened up under his feet at a Shenzhen residential compound on Tuesday evening, the Southern Metropolis Daily reported.

The sink hole that swallowed 25-year old security guard Yang Jiabin measured five metres in diameter and was some four floors deep.

It is unclear what caused the tragedy. The daily said residents at the residential compound have repeatedly complained about tremors caused by an adjacent construction site only two metres from where the collapse occurred.

The construction site belongs to the Shenzhen Press Group, a publisher of some of the city's leading newspapers, the daily said.

The Shenzhen Special Zone Daily, one of the group's newspapers, reported the collapse without mentioning its parent company. It did quote "an on-site expert" saying that the buildings near the sink hole were safe.

Residents did not heed assurances and many left to spend the night in a hotel or with friends, the Guangming Daily wrote.

The hepatitis B infection does not usually require treatment because most adults clear the infection spontaneously. On the other hand, treatment of chronic infection may be necessary to reduce the risk of cirrhosis and liver cancer. The Chinese capital, home to around 20 million people, has been wrapped in thick smog since Friday, reducing visibility and disrupting traffic. Such pollution has been identified as a major cause of asthma and respiratory diseases.

Data posted today by the monitoring centre showed particulate matter measuring less than 2.5 micrometres in diameter (PM2.5) had reached more than 600 micrograms per square metre at some monitoring stations in Beijing, and was as high as 900 yesterday evening.

The recommended daily level for PM2.5 is 20, according to the World Health Organisation, while the US's Environmental Protection Agency advises anything greater than 300 would trigger a health warning of "emergency conditions" with the entire population likely affected.

"This is really the worst on record not only from the official data but also from the monitoring data from the US embassy - some areas in (neighbouring) Hebei province are even worst than Beijing," said Zhou Rong, climate and energy campaigner at Greenpeace.

Emergency response measures were adopted on Sunday in some areas to deal with the heavy pollution, a senior official with the Beijing Municipal Environmental Protection Bureau said.

Outdoor sports activities for primary and middle schools were ordered to be halted from Sunday to Tuesday in extreme pollution areas, including Tongzhou, Miyun, Daxing, Mentougou and Fangshan districts, the municipal authorities said.

China said at the end of last year that it would begin releasing hourly pollution data for its biggest cities. Beijing has already committed to a timetable to improve air quality in the city, and has relocated most of its heavy industry, but surrounding regions have not made the same commitments, said Mr Zhou. "For Beijing, cleaning up will take a whole generation but other regions don't even have any targets to cut coal burning. I bet the pollution here is mainly from those surrounding regions."
